Visits to SA Wine Regions

South Australia is world famous for its wines, and unlike most other major cities, these beautiful wine regions are very near to the city of Adelaide.

It's no secret that the Barossa produces some of Australia's finest wines. Tanunda is where you can begin your visit by picking up information from the Barossa Wine and Visitor Centre. The Barossa's many cellar doors, antique shops, gourmet food outlets, B&Bs, hotels, beautiful parks and walking trails are just a short trip away from Adelaide and a must see on any trip to South Australia. Picture postcard views and historic townships are only 20 minutes away in the beautiful Adelaide Hills. Explore the Clare Valley wine region and stay overnight at the award winning Thorn Park Country House. You'll also find a variety of boutique wineries, the Riesling Trail to walk or cycle along, dozens of B&B hideaways and antique shops in heritage towns.

Beaches

Adelaide's pristine beaches stretch forever. Catch a tram to historic Glenelg or start at Semaphore, the dyke paradise beach with a great swell. Head south to Maslins Beach, one of the most beautiful nude beaches you will ever come across or motor down to Middleton and Boomers surf beaches, only 1 hour from the city. Check out one of the many peninsulas that give SA its distinctive coastline.

Days away

Kangaroo Island is simply one of the world's most exciting wilderness experiences for unspoilt nature, seals and Remarkable Rocks.

The Flinders Ranges, the ancient rugged landscapes at the edge of the outback, is an experience not to be forgotten. Equally the Coorong National Park, with its fragile beauty and thousands of Pelicans and other bird life. A short trip away is Robe (for lobster) and the Coonawarra wine district.

The Adelaide Hills

The Hills are Adelaide's instant escape because they're less than a half-hour drive from the city centre! Suddenly, it seems, you are driving through pretty countryside with hillsides draped in vines and orchards and passing through a string of villages, many with galleries, pubs, restaurants and cafés. Walking trails, gardens, national parks and the chance to appreciate the seasons as they unfold are just some of the gifts on offer to any visitor here.

Restaurants

Adelaide is renowned for innovative cooking, great chefs and even greater wines. The main dining strips are Rundle Street (east), Gouger and Hutt Street in the CBD, O'Connell and Melbourne Streets in North Adelaide, and Unley and King William Roads, just out of the City. The Parade at Norwood is also a great place to eat.

Shopping

Adelaide has several excellent areas for that essential holiday shopping spree. The West End of Adelaide (Hindley St and North Terrace) has many art galleries including JamFactory Contemporary Craft and Design on Morphett Street. Rundle Street in Adelaide's East End is boutique heaven, and bristling with al fresco dining.

The Adelaide Central Market is a foodies heaven with hundreds of stalls selling fresh produce and specialty foods from around the world. A short way from the city,

The Parade at Norwood is a beautiful boulevard of cafes and shops, while King William Road in Unley is the place to go for upscale clothing shops and some of Adelaide's top restaurants.

Walks around the city

The enchanting leafy cultural boulevard, North Terrace, is the setting for some cultural indulgence featuring the Botanic Gardens, the Art Gallery of SA, the Museum, Library and Migration Museum. The Adelaide Zoo is also surprisingly close, just five minutes from North Terrace, and the River Torrens is an outstanding place for a daytime stroll. Tandanya Gallery on Grenfell St is also a must see.
