The South Australian Rainbow Advocacy Alliance in partnership with Equality Australia are honoured to present this event dedicated to the legacy of the late Ian Purcell OAM, a prominent LGBTIQA+ advocate fondly known as ‘Godfather of the Gay Community’.
Each year, this oration provides a platform to highlight critical issues facing LGBTIQA+ South Australians, continuing Ian’s lifetime work of fighting discrimination against LGBTIQA+ communities.
This year, Anna Brown OAM will deliver the oration, reflecting on the 50th anniversary of the decriminalisation of homosexuality in SA and the urgent need to maintain progress for LGBTIQ+ communities.
Anna Brown OAM is the founder and CEO of Equality Australia, a national advocacy organisation that works towards equality for LGBTIQ+ people.
Anna was co-chair of the “Yes” Campaign during the national postal survey on marriage equality in Australia.
In the years since we achieved marriage equality, Equality Australia has led the urgent work to remove laws that disadvantaged LGBTIQ+ Australians and protect the community from hate and discrimination.
Anna and her team at Equality Australia have contributed to bans on conversion practices in 4 states, gender recognition for trans people which is now accessible across Australia and has led a legal challenge that eventually led to inclusion of the LGBTQ+ community in our next Census.
